Specifications

The technical detail behind every Lake & Grain floor, in hardwood, carpet, tile, and luxury vinyl plank.

Three oak flooring samples showing light, natural, and dark finish options

Engineered versus solid

Solid flooring is milled from one piece of wood. Engineered flooring places a real hardwood surface over a stable layered core, which can suit a wider range of rooms and installation methods.

Wear layer

On engineered flooring, the wear layer is the real hardwood above the core. Its construction helps determine how the floor may be renewed later.

Plank width

The face width of each board. Width changes the rhythm of a room and can influence layout, movement, and installation planning.

Finish and gloss

Finish protects the wood; gloss describes how much light that surface reflects. Matte surfaces read softly, while satin carries a restrained sheen.

Edge detail

The treatment where boards meet. A square edge reads nearly continuous; a micro-bevel draws a fine line around each plank.

Pile height and face weight

On carpet, pile height is how tall the yarn stands and face weight is how much yarn is used per square yard. Together they describe density, which affects how the carpet feels and how well it holds up in traffic.

Slip resistance and grout joint

On tile, slip resistance describes how much traction the surface offers underfoot, and the grout joint is the width of the filled space between tiles. Both are chosen for the room and the size of the tile.

Core type and wear layer (LVP)

On luxury vinyl plank, the core determines how rigid and dimensionally stable the plank is, and the wear layer is the clear surface above the printed layer that carries daily traffic. A thicker wear layer generally holds up longer in busy rooms.

Installation methods

Nail-down, glue-down, and floating installations each require the right construction, subfloor, and site conditions.
